Paper Pressure

David Villano | 1/1/2006

Knight Ridder's largest investor, Private Capital Management, has demanded that the San Jose, Calif.-based media company put itself up for sale.

Most analysts attribute the company's woes to an ongoing nationwide decline in newspaper readership. Across the country, average readership has declined 2.6% on weekdays and 3.1% on Sundays. Here's how local papers stack up:

Newspaper Daily Circulation 6-Month Change Sunday Circulation 6-Month Change
Miami Herald 291,198 -4.0% 401,187 -3.6%
South Florida Sun-Sentinel 227,294 -2.7 322,445 -4.0%
El Nuevo Herald 85,534 -3.0 99,882 No change
